  How do location based services (or LBS) work?

LBS use several technologies for determining the user's geographical location.
Some LBS use advanced technologies like global positioning systems (GPS) to determine the consumer location. A GPS device (for example cell phone) uses satellites to determine its location and is accurate within 50 to 100 meters.
Some LBS use triangulation technologies which use a laptop's wireless connection (or WiFi) to position a user by receiving signals from wireless hotspot locations and is accurate within 50 to 1,000 meters.
Several LBS require the user to manually update their location, by entering it through their cellphone, for example SMS, or a web page.
